When Purple Is Not Enough

Published in Stone Canoe

Distance, a window in infinite regression. So intimate the leaf and branch.

The tree unreachable.  Nothing exists in that field.

The sky blinded by stars. The dark claims its cold cloak.

The child opened every door until she could not. The day witnessed

the piano’s lost dream. Music waited behind the barn.

We searched constantly for rainbows. Red was transparent before it became a color.

One day we will remember that we are old, our voices beyond mortal.

This life searches for a way in. Leave slowly.

This is not the ending we wanted. The flowers know this.

We will never forget the dancing scent of lilac, how the rain confused grass with sorrow.

Someone from our past continues watching. Our wild cannot hide.

Come closer. Memory’s warm breath is not what it seems.

Gather heartbreaks like dandelions. Make of them a crown.

All promises have disappeared down the street. They wait to be set free.

I can’t tell you how I feel in any language. But I need you to listen.
